Industrial Growth

Maggie Slater

Maggie started out in the trades as a welder and has applied that skill to her art. Using both recycled and new materials, she creates functional pieces for both commission and personal expression.

Maggie shares her creative space with an industrial fabrication company in Edmonton where she has great access to scraps and other materials she can repurpose for her work. The space has a large table and all the tools she needs; tools that are more about function and use than a meaningful history. For Maggie, it’s about the final piece and the most effective way to get there.

When I visited Maggie in January, she took an old winch destined for the scrapyard and started to make it into a lamp. The industrial feel coupled with the gravity defying chain made this a piece that would fit anyone’s home – even if you’re not into industrial sheik.

You can view more of Maggie’s work online at https://www.industrialgrowth.ca/ or on social media.  Check out the podcast of her interview.
